EuroPac 3D was commissioned to scan a series
of insects such as killer hornets and giant tarantula eating millipedes. The end goal was to scale these insects 6 times bigger and have them rapid prototyped in order that they could be re-manufactured in ceramic and therefore the difficulty in this project was ensuring that all the detail on tiny wings and the like were kept.
Resolution was of utmost importance and therefore
EuroPac 3D staff chose a Percpeptron V5 scanner to enable the capture
of the tiniest of details. The Perceptron laser has possibly the
highest resolution of all hand held scanners on the market, with a data
capture rate of 458,000 pts per second and an a point resolution of
0.004mm.
Well over 5 million points were collected on each insect and the cloud data was then processed in Polyworks software to produce a watertight STL triangular surface mesh suitable for rapid prototyping.
