Roll Cage Reverse Engineering

EuroPac 3D was recently asked if it was possible to fully
scan the complete interior of a car for the purpose of designing a roll
cage around the interior framework.
EuroPac 3D set about digitising the car as quickly as possible
using a 3.6m Infinite2 Cimcore 7 axis measuring arm and Perceptron
laser scanner. Two hours later the complete dataset had been collected
and a triangular mesh surface was produced from the point cloud.

• The
triangular surface mesh was then imported into Rapidform XOR reverse
engineering software. Rapidfrom enables the user to automatically
detect geometry from the scan data such as holes, planes, cylinders etc
and also analyse any cross-section of the scan data.
• The first stage of the modelling process involved
taking a fixed section through the model and then offsetting this
profile to determine the optimum profile for one roll cage loops.
• Analysis of volumetric cross-section to determine
clearance for roll cage.
• Once the optimum profile for the loop was determined, a
sweep of roll bar along the profile was created and fixed into
geometric locations in the car.
• First off framework to prove concept of modelling from
scan data.
• Live transfer of completed cage into Solidworks, the
customers preferred CAD package for design and manufacture including
history tree. |
