Scanning Arnold Schwarzenegger

A hand sculpted model of Arnold Schwarzenegger was recently brought to the offices of EuroPac 3D. The task was to scan the model with the highest resolution possible in order that the model could be scaled to a smaller size and then printed on a rapid prototyping machine.

The reason for the model be scanned at such a high resolution was small veins in Arnold’s arms and thin strands of hair had been handcrafted to a fraction of a millimeter; when these fine details were reprinted at even a smaller size there was a distinct danger that they could be lost forever.

The client contacted many possible scanning solution providers, however EuroPac 3D was chosen because of their ability to reach a resolution of 4.5 microns with it’s V5 Perceptron laser. The model was scanned in less than half an hour and a watertight STL mesh produced that was scaled to the correct sizing as requested. The digital model was then sent to Hong Kong where a specialist 3D figure printing company produced a model that everyone involved was extremely impressed with.
